The coveted role of Entrepreneur in Residence has been gaining more prominence, as venture capital firms have been struggling to find the next Intel, Apple, or Google . The model is a  calculated way for a VC firm to bring a successful company into being and to increase the odds of solid returns.  An EIR is often an individual who has track-record in successfully starting and selling a start-up.  NY times
